Block Paintings The paintings in this section often start with, or soon incorporate, use of a hand carved wooden or linoleum block print process. A brush is still used, but it is the block stamping process that leads the way.

Monotypes also use the interface between the painted block substrate and the paper to generate the image. There are often unexpected and interesting results that stand alone or can be enhanced.

“The Aftermath”

This piece was unfortunately inspired by the tragedy of the Rogue Valley, Oregon fires in the summer of 2020.  Much of the valley where I grew up and where many of my family and friends have lived was destroyed.  I created “The Aftermath” after taking a virtual video-drone tour of the massive destruction.   Looking for pieces of materials to salvage… and hope.  I have contributed to several organizations that are working to help restore the families and the landscape of that area.

Near the water- have been inspired by living near the water: sailboat regattas, cargo ships going by, and seawalls near and far.

MONOTYPES

IMG_5750.JPG

My first monotype—made at the very end of a two day design workshop— as a lark. This was not a workshop for monotype, but the instructor let us experiment. She had earlier asked us to draw something from our garden…and I later translated that into this monotype. I added pastel later.

This was the start of “My Joyous Kale” series (which you can see in the “Plantae” section). My kale grew to over 6 feet tall and took over one section of my garden for over a year.

Yes Melting…. inspired by walking across melting glaciers in Alaska.

Snow storm - February 2019, from out my studio window. It even covered and froze parts of the cove mudflats when the tide was receding.
